Massive expansion of Australia-Asia PowerLink solar capacity planned
Published Date : 2025-October-31, Friday
SunCable is planning to inject a lot more capacity into its Australia-Asia PowerLink Project by development of a large-scale solar generation and BESS precinct on Muckaty Aboriginal Land Trust, situated in the Barkly Regional LGA approximately 870km south of Darwin and 125km north of Tennant Creek by road.
The Proposal will add to the generation capacity of the Australia-Asia PowerLink Project, which currently has a single solar generation precinct already approved in the Barkly region on the nearby Powell Creek Station.
The Muckaty Solar Precinct aims to generate renewable solar energy for dispatch through the already approved AAPowerLink Project’s transmission system.
It will consist of modularised 325 MW peak capacity solar fields on single axis trackers, plus local collector network, inverters, batteries, substations. The number of fields delivered in each stage will be dictated by customer offtake agreements, with potentially up to 20 GW solar and 21.7 GW/hr of BESS capacity.
Each generation site is expected to take approximately five years to construct and operate for approximately 70 years following commissioning.
The proposal includes infrastructure to support a transmission corridor connecting north to the AAPowerLink Project infrastructure on Powell Creek Station.
The Project Area comprises 105,000 hectares of land under assessment for solar development potential, with a disturbance footprint of approximately 49,300ha identified.
A referral for the project has been submitted to the Northern Territory environmental regulator for assessment.
SunCable is targeting a final investment decision on the AAPowerLink Project towards the end of 2027.
