In what has been a massive week for Atmos Renewables, first
signs of life for the Merredin BESS in WA were recorded into the network in
late September indicating the project has moved into the
commissioning/connection stage.
The 100 MW / 400 MWh project is located approximately 8km south-west of Merredin, ~260km east of Perth in the Wheatbelt region of WA.
The approximately 4-hectare project site, previously used for cropping and sheep grazing, is situated immediately adjacent to Western Power’s Merredin Terminal sub-station.
Co-developed with Nomad Energy, the BESS consists of Tesla Megapack battery packs combined with grid-forming ready inverter technology which will be connected to the Merredin Terminal. GenusPlus Group was the lead construction contractor.
Merredin BESS reached financial close in late June 2025, and at that time Atmos acquired 100% ownership of the project. Construction started in Q3 2025, and was expected to create 40-50 direct jobs during construction and up to 3-5 permanent jobs during its operating life.
Late last week Atmos, a division of Igneo Infrastructure Partners, announced the financial close of the 400 MW / 1600 MWh Teebar BESS in Queensland and the 470 MW Parron Maam Marang Wind Farm, also in Western Australia.
With the Merredin BESS included, Atmos said it “has now taken 970 MW of CIS-backed capacity through financial close, reinforcing its ability to progress large-scale renewable energy and storage projects from development into construction and operation”.
There are two other BESS projects under construction in WA; Neoen’s 164 MW / 905 MWh Muchea Battery and Alinta Energy’s 100 MW / 200 MWh Wagerup BESS which has been delayed by construction issues.
