Lake Road BESS is a proposed 400 MW / 1600 MWh standalone
battery to be located at Tuggerah, within the Central Coast Council area and
Hunter–Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone.
The approximately $350 million project would occupy a consolidated 1.79-hectare industrial site adjoining Tuggerah sub-station.
The preliminary design includes 56 Sungrow PowerTitan 3.0 blocks containing 224 battery modules, associated inverters, transformers and control systems.
Underground cabling would connect the facility to existing network infrastructure, including a crossing beneath Lake Road.
Connection arrangements are being discussed with Transgrid and Ausgrid, with connection voltage and final configuration still to be determined.
Lake Road BESS will provide four-hour storage, capacity firming and frequency control ancillary services.
Construction is expected to take approximately 12 months, with an anticipated operating life of around 25 years.
The project applicant, Lake Road Battery Pty Ltd, is a joint venture between the existing landowners and Smart Commercial Energy Pty Ltd which has primarily operated in the C&I rooftop solar sector until now.
Castle Group is also planning to connect its proposed 500 MW Tuggerah BESS to the Tuggerah Sub-station.
Lake Road BESS and Tuggerah BESS are sandwiched between two Ausgrid battery proposals; the 200 MW Wyong BESS project, which will connect to the Wyong Zone Sub-station to the north, and 150 MW / 300 MWh Berkeley Vale BESS connecting to the Berkeley Vale Zone Sub-station to the south.
