AGL planning its first Queensland big battery
Published Date : 2025-January-27, Monday
AGL Energy has added a Queensland battery project to its
development queue, submitting a development approval application with the
Western Downs Regional Council for an approximately 500 MW / 2000 MWh project
near Brigalow.
The Queensland Battery is planned on a project area of 323 hectares located approximately 10.3km south-west of Brigalow, close to the Kogan Creek gas-fired power station. As the map above shows, this region is a hot spot for large-scale renewable energy projects.
The BESS is expected to have a footprint of 12ha within the project area, and will consist of approximately 560 battery packs containing 24 lithium-ion type battery modules per pack and 140 step-up transformers.
The project could provide up to 200 jobs during the construction phase and up to 6 full time jobs during operation.
AGL lodged the DA application for the Queensland Battery with the Western Downs Regional Council in December last year.
It is the first battery project in Queensland for AGL, which also has under development the 500 MW Liddell BESS and 500 MW Tomago BESS in NSW and the 200 MW Loy Yang A BESS in Victoria.
AGL’s 50 MW Broken Hill BESS in NSW and 250 MW Torrens Island Battery are operational.
