MMA shows us the future for offshore wind in Australia
Published Date : 2023-June-14, Wednesday
Perth-headquartered MMA Offshore provides a glimpse of the
offshore wind farm opportunities that will eventually present themselves to oil
& gas industry participants in Australia.
MMA Offshore, formerly Mermaid Marine, was formed deep in WA’s
LNG territory in Dampier in 1989 and from modest beginnings built itself up to
be an international offshore services and vessel contractor for the oil &
gas industry with a fleet of 18 vessels.
MMA was recently awarded three contracts supporting offshore
windfarm developments in Taiwan. Three of its vessels - MMA Pinnacle, MMA
Prestige and MMA Crystal – were awarded contracts for cable installation, ROV
and survey operations, accommodation support services and cable trenching and
survey support services for various wind farm projects in Taiwan.
MMA managing director David Ross said, “These contract
awards also mark a major milestone in our diversification strategy with
offshore wind being a key target market for MMA into the future”.
No doubt oil & gas industry service providers such as MMA
will be monitoring the progress of the offshore wind industry in Australia with
an eye to jumping in at the appropriate time.
With a spate of offshore wind farm projects planned across
southern Australia, including in regions where traditional oil & gas fields
are in steep decline, there’s an obvious pool of skills and resources that can
be transferable between the two industries.
This graphic illustrates where these opportunities might be
found.
