Vestas planning its third & biggest Australian wind farm project

Danish wind turbine giant Vestas is looking
to consolidate its position in the Australian upstream renewable energy industry
by making plans to develop a new wind farm project near Tara, in the Western
Downs area of Queensland.
The Tara Wind Farm is planned as an up
to 164-turbine project capable of generating 1200 MW of electricity into the
NEM.
The overall project development area
covers 40,000 hectares of flat, privately owned land used primarily for
broadacre farming, with only a small portion of this land expected to be
disturbed during construction.
The wind farm will connect to the
existing 330kV transmission line running north to south between the Braemar and
Bulli Creek substations.
Vestas expects the project to inject
an estimated investment of $2-3 billion in the Western Downs region, creating
up to 300-400 jobs during construction and 30-40 long-term positions.
The project is still at an early stage
of development, with community information sessions scheduled last week.
Tara Wind Farm will be the third
project Vestas owns in Australia, including the 250 MW Captains Mountain Wind
Farm located near Millmerran in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland and the 550
MW Piambong Wind Farm approximately 20km north-west of Mudgee in NSW.
Vestas is also co-developing the 700 MW Winterbourne Wind Farm near Walcha in the New England region of NSW with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, which acquired Vestas’ shareholding in the project in December 2021.
